As a follow up... I had only looked at the first of your 2 photo links. The first photo relates to the line that runs toward Peabody and eastman gelatine. The second photo relates to the line that runs from Peabody to Danvers and on to Wakefield Junction. This section is indeed out of service, and h...

The line is still active. To my knowledge, no tank cars of acid move over the line since that article you mentioned. Eastman Gelatine still receives covered hoppers of, I think, bone meal, or some similar materials. There are a couple moves per week. I can usually catch the train on Fridays, often l...

How did the "clean up" go, and what was the extent of damage to the cars? It did not seem major, but then an old car, who knows. Any updated photos of the clearance posted anywhere? Thanks

Some time ago a couple of those Budd cars made their way to the Seminole Gulf RR in Fort Myers, which I believe was operated by the same owner as Cape Cod. It was quite a feeling to be in Florida and riding an old budd commuter coach that still had the purple T markings. I felt that I was back commu...

guilford business train in Auburn?

by highrail ¦  Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:18 am ¦  Forum: New England Railfan ¦  Topic: guilford business train in Auburn? ¦  Replies: 1 ¦  Views: 701

A buddy of mine said that he spotted what he thought was the Guilford/Pan Am business train southbound through Auburn, Maine this morning (Tues.). Anyone know where they were, or where they are headed?

Where do they base the cars when they are not on the road?

I was up at the intervale location yesterday...no work has been done on the siding that is planned just east of the satation. No word on when that might happen.

Just south of the repair shop that was in a couple of the photos is a hand operated turntable...very cool. It is right by the side of the road. A pretty rare find these days

regarding the siding at Glenn, I do not think that it has been completed, but I am up that way in the next couple days so I will check it out. The other reason that I heard why they were building it is that it is near the polar express location and would assist with equipment moves related to that.

unusual cars in Peabody/Salem on Thursday

I spotted the local in the north salem yard, but was not able to stop and check it out. In addition to the usual covered hoppers for Eastman Gelatine I noticed about 6 large open hopper cars, which I have never seen on the line before. I would have to assume that they were for Eastman as they are th...

CSRR equipment to Gorham for August 11th?

I was reading somewhere that there will be short trips from Gorham depot to Berlin as part of the Centennial clebration on August 11th. I thought I heard that CSRR would supply the coaches. Is this true? If so, any word on when they would make the move? It would be great to chase that move. I assume...

I have been following this thread and have found it to be frustrating to the point where it is time to turn away. There is a basic point being lost here, regardless of how one might feel about the possible restoration of the 501. The engine is under the ownership of the 470 club. The club is in char...

There were two water tankers from the twin mtn fire dept to provide water for the thirsty engine. They met the 7470 at the notch.

It was a great day. As we were waiting in the notch we heard radio transimissions that indicated that they were having problems maintaining the fire due to the coal being less than terrific. They had stopped at one point to build up the fire. Lot's of clinkers, they said. It was a great sound to lis...

There is no longer a wye at salem. The wye was removed when the current station was upgraded several years ago. I cannot remember the date, but it was still in place at the time of the Beverly bridge fire several years ago. A couple of the tracks were modified in the bridge street yard to accommodat...

Conway Scenic Grade Crossing accident

by highrail ¦  Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:36 am ¦  Forum: New England Railfan ¦  Topic: Conway Scenic Grade Crossing accident ¦  Replies: 1 ¦  Views: 929

I was in North Conway yesterday and the local paper had a photo of a car that was struck at the Ellis River camping area crossing last weekend. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries. Any other details? It seems to me that the Conway Scenic has a great safety record...I cannot recall another...
