Kenmore Switches

Just a minute ago, leaving Kenmore heading inbound, I witnessed the train pull up to a red signal where the two station tracks come together and wait until a T employee walked up the tracks and threw the switch manually, before using a flashlight to guide the train past the red signal. Are they havi...

I don't understand what's so bad about the large T logo. I like it, and don't think it looks too disproportionate in size to the rest of the unit.

Its certainly better, IMHO, than just solid grey, which it would be otherwise. More visually interesting.

Probably because automobile traffic isn't decreasing. Its increasing. Sure, younger people are less likely to own a car now, but total vehicle-miles traveled are still increasing, IIRC. Nope, vehicle miles driven peaked in 2007, took a dip with the coming of the Lesser Depression, and has mostly dr...

Railroads require big capital outlays. So do highways. But you'll not hear a politician talking about "rationalizing" the highway system in the face of deteriorating roadway conditions and decreasing traffic. There's no "Highway Investment and Improvement Act" with a 5-year plan...

Just passed by on MBCR 181 and saw a PAR loco and what looked like easily two dozen cars sitting on the runaround tracks parallel to the T before Chelsea. I've only ever seen CSX there with a handful of cars before. Was it maybe headed up the line toward Salem?

That looks beautiful! Wonder if the T might consider a repaint if they end up hanging on to any of the F40's for a while...

That all makes perfect sense guys, thanks! sery, I've encountered that too once or twice. I saw a mid-train cab car on a Rockburyport train display "Now arriving at Lynn" while at the platform at North Station, and I think once I saw a Fitchburg train at North Station display the same, wit...

Changing the subject a little bit, but has anyone actually seen the LED signs in these work? Every time I've ridden on one (maybe a half dozen times), the signs have either displayed the T logo the whole time, or have scrolled the date and time. I'm curious because I could actually see them being ve...

A Red Line train's brakes locked up just shy of 5pm at Central Sq today. Harvard, Central, and Kendall were evacuated and the line was screwed up for a bit. Service was supposedly moving the entire time, but there were some ~20 min gaps between trains. When was Kendall evacuated? I was in Kendall w...

Paying two different, incompatible fares wouldn't really be an issue with taking commuter rail BBY-BOS then the Silver Line, because fares aren't collected on the CR between BBY and BOS. Sure, technically they should be collecting Zone 1A fares, but I've taken the commuter rail between Ruggles and S...

Was scrolling through the TIGER Grant awards today, and saw that NHDOT and the NHN got a $1.4 million grant to rebuild portions of their mainline. The award can be found on page 8 of this PDF: http://www.dot.gov/sites/dot.dev/files/docs/TIGER_2013_FactSheets_0.pdf" onclick="window.open(thi...

The Portsmouth Navy Yard shipment of nuclear fuel is not a valid comparasion to the Lac-Megantic situation. I don't believe Portsmouth receives any nuclear fuel by rail anymore. I am not familiar with new unused nuclear fuel. Possibly, it is inert until activated in a reactor. Maybe, someone on thi...

I think it's worth noting that oil is hardly the most dangerous commodity shipped via rail. It's just the most high-profile one right now because of the Lac-Mégantic disaster. Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't Pan Am ship nuclear fuel to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and remove spent fuel? Yet you don't see...

Yeah, I'm trying to go to Ayer. :/ It could use direct access to a controlled access highway. Actually, in fact, The Red line WAS Supposed to continue past Alewife along the median strip of the never-built Route 3 freeway, then just shy of 128, turn off Route 3 to get to Bedford. Or unless it was t...

I admit I have very limited experience using the commuter train or bus. I've been trying to figure out how this all works and I think I have it down, but what better way to be sure then to ask the experts. I'm interested in riding the Providence/Stoughton line from the Mansfield Station up to the R...
