I was one that road the train this week. In fact woke up 30 minutes late and still made my 5:10 train. Amazing! Had some slow orders partway down to NYP. There's areas where the track is cut out from the cliff and after severe rainstorms they have to go slow in case there are rocks on the track. Eve...

I ride the train for several reasons: For one... it's civilized. I'm not crushed in a seat, with no legroom and pretzels handed to me as a meal. It's cost effective. 1-2 times a month I will commute from ALB to NYC for the day. Flying would be outrageous in terms of price. Driving would end up being...

Private is right. Heck, on my last LSL trip I think I was the only one to use the shower in my car. :-)

Gossip?

Hardly Mr Fels. If you'll recall, there were been numerous comments on the old forum from folks who complained about the rudeness on the LSL. As we don't have access to those forums any more I can't point you to specific posts. But I can assure you they were there. I don't appreciate the insinuation...

Why some folks use sleepers

 by Greg Moore ¦  Sun Jun 06, 2004 12:12 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Sleeper fares - Reasonable or "Otherwise"? ¦  Replies: 105 ¦  Views: 13545

I'm one of those that has done the ALB-LA and back trips (not quite NYC, but that wouldn't have changed the price much.) Specifically, LSL to Chicago standard room). SW to LA (with a 3 day layover in flagstaff) (Deluxe to Flagstaff, standard from there to LA). LA to San Francisco (coach) and then Sa...

Bumping

Couple of comments: 1) One reason that airlines traditionally allowed "double-booking" was under the earliest versions of SABRE (don't know currently) two different agents could sell the same seat at once. In order to make the system as efficient as possible, records in the DB weren't lock...

Money for projects

Given the link Mr. Norman presented concerning the tunnel improvements... if Congress is debating about sending money to NYC for obviously needed safety improvements and calling it pork-barrel spending, rest assured, getting any Federal money for Farley will be well neigh impossible.

Nothing New under the Sun

CDTA in Albany NY area tried something similar. "Oh, let's build a spanking new station and move Amtrak to it." Not bad so far (I'll ignore the budget overruns and all that.). Of course when it came time for Amtrak to move, CDTA claimed Amtrak wasn't willing to pay the rent. Amtrak claimed...

52.5 mph aint to bad...

by Greg Moore ¦  Thu May 27, 2004 12:22 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Downeaster expansion in trouble ¦  Replies: 13 ¦  Views: 3250

Considering that it is making stops along the way.

Granted, 79mph will help some, but I wouldn't noc 52.5mph either.

Downeaster

by Greg Moore ¦  Tue May 25, 2004 9:15 pm ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Downeaster expansion in trouble ¦  Replies: 13 ¦  Views: 3250

Somewhat of a shame, but again, not a total loss. At least they're still considering their options. This past weekend would have been almost perfect for us to take the Downeaster except for one detail.... only one daily trip to Boston from Albany. (the fact that it would arrive at a different statio...

DNC and Amtrak

Umm... I think we're drifting off-topic here. Is there something Amtrak specific here since the first thread? How about how I spent the last weekend in Portland and had several people comment favorably on the Downeaster service. It was nice to actually see "Amtrak" signage in the city. (on...

Viewliner vs. Superliner

 by Greg Moore ¦  Sun May 16, 2004 1:11 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Viewliner vs. Superlinerr ¦  Replies: 46 ¦  Views: 8118

In my order of preference, I'd probably take:
Superliner Deluxe>Viewliner Deluxe>Viewliner Standard>Superliner Standard>Coach.

And those last two I might switch.

My experience in the Superliner standard was I felt far more crowded than in a Viewliner.

Vote locally

That is of course true, that you can only vote for your local reps.

But it seldom hurts to let them know of your support.

Interest Payments

Perhaps someone can help me out here. If I can get a 10 year mortgage at a fixed rate of 4.25% on a refinance, why can't Amtrak do better than 9.5%?
