Once again, the Diamond RH77CA is the best I've used. For me at least, it more than doubled my reception over the "rubber duckie" antenna that comes stock with many radios and scanners. Hooked up to my Motorola radio, it has no problem hearing 5 watt detectors 20 miles away...granted, usin...

Canon Powershot S3 or S5. I know quite a few people who've used them and get results comparable with that of a Digital SLR (if you know how to use it correctly, of course).

Trains were N758 (coal train to Fort Drum, NY) and G384 (grain train to the Port of Albany). Coal trains not going to Rochester have no reason not to take the Shore (same goes for grain trains since none of them do anything in Rochester). The dispatcher sent them down the Shore because he had the ho...

CSX has been running pretty much the same amount of intermodal traffic over the past several years. And while NS has picked up some UPS traffic, CSX has picked up some JB Hunt traffic. Overall, I think it's pretty much balanced out, though there's rumors of CSX dumping entire trains worth of traffic...

The NS employees I've spoken with don't seem to like their SD70M-2s either.

Dan – I'm certain range is a factor. However my usual listening spot (family room at home) is less than a mile as the crow flies from the Coldwater detector. So the distance to Coldwater is PROBABLY not an issue when I'm home. (Incidentally from home my cheapie handheld occasionally picks up the Ba...

Two of these beauties found their way up here today, with Q117 being unlucky enough to have one as a leader. They were moving right along, probably trying to get to Buffalo to get off the damn thing!

Short Line Pay

Hey guys, I have a friend who's looking at joining a short line from a class one. Any idea on what kind of pay he would be making? FYI, he already has all the other benefits weighted out, so this is really the only thing left - he already knows it's going to be a decent cut in pay over working for a...

if there is such little to no traffic on that area, then why doesnt the NYS&W run there frieghts in the daylight instead of like 3 in the monrning, granted they would have to worry about commuter trains from campbell hall to Port jervis but it could probably be done. That's just the way the sch...

Oddly enough it sure seems like traffic is going back up after a year long slump. I've been noticing more extras being run lately, which is a good thing given the situation with the furloughed guys. Progressive Railroading says traffic is supposed to turn around in 2008 and go nowhere but up in 200...

For Silver Springs/Portageville, you'd better get there before sunrise. Between about 6 and 9, you'll get a good 4-5 trains, then it dies right down. You'll have H2R going Buffalo to Silver Springs and return (they leave Buffalo around Noon), and then 310 in the afternoon, and that'll be it. If you'...

While you can have legitimate hits on multiple axles, a readout on 3 consecutive axles with one both sides, one right side and one left side is very likely a hot box simulator on a car or locomotive. Conrail had that device on some locomotives and on Rail Analyzer Car CR-22. I don't know what CSX u...

Every time I've heard the maintainer testing it, it always rambles off a speed of 255 MPH. And, generally speaking, if it gives more than one hit for a train, it's almost always a maintainer working on it or the detector flat-out screwing up.

Someone higher up on CSX made it a point to have "Conrail" deleted from all defect detectors announcements by 12/31/07, at least on the Albany Division.....I can't speak for the other divisions, maybe there too. At some point "in the near future," the automated voice will begin ...
