When I qualified on the Harlem in 1977, it was from MO to Millerton, although service north of Wassaic had been discontinued by then. You mean passenger service. Freight service to Millerton continued until March 1980, of course. Freight service to Millerton continued until March 27, 1980 but Agway...

Before the extension, the tracks ended at Furnace Bank Road in the hamlet of Wassaic. When the extension was first proposed, it was going to end at Furnace Bank Road, but there was no parking there, or room for a yard as there was at the former gravel pit, a mile north. Extension further north is ve...

Additional improvement to the track to get it up to 60 to 70 mph running would be great from North Bennington to downtown Burlington (for the Ethan Allen Express). And while they are at it - run a RDC between Bellows Falls and Rutland for even greater connectivity!!! You will not see 70mph unless t...

Traveling on the SW Chief last year, the cafe car attendant made an announcement that the use of personal alcohol on the train was not permitted in coach, but customers in private rooms could do as they pleased.

Never mind Third Rail or electrification, look how long it has taken to install CTC.

The NYC was not a completely flat railroad. The West Shore and the B&A had grades that required more than two units on most trains.

"V" was generally the symbol for Selkirk (I was told that this dated way back to the days before Selkirk when they had a yard of some sort in Ravena and was originally a West Shore symbol. The book I have only shows 4 trains with a "V" symbol out of Selkirk but in later Penn Cen...

US Border Patrol will almost always board the Lake Shore Limited at either Buffalo-Depew, Rochester or Syracuse and perform a sweep of the train. I ride the LSL a lot through upstate NY and rarely do I ever not see them do their sweep. They'll come through and ask each individual passenger whether ...

In the 70s, I worked as a fireman from New Haven to Boston on trains 170 and 183. I would drive from my home in northern NJ and park in Rye, then take a train to NH. I was able to get on 183 in NH on the way home, and it stopped in Rye. The engineer on 183 was known as a speed demon at that time and...

Yes there use to be a connection near Kobackers supermarket/LMA fuel company, but it was taken out decades ago. This connection was taken out many years ago. Probably in the 1940s or earlier. None of the old timers that I worked with, who had hired out in the 1940s, could remember the Put crossing ...

I have to agree that the Miami Amtrak station is poorly located. No connection to Tri Rail or Metrorail, only cabs and it is not in a neighborhood that I would want to walk in.The old FEC station was at least located downtown. Hopefully, the new station at the airport will be a big improvement.

The area is pretty safe. I used to work there on the Adirondack from Harmon. There were plenty of nice places to eat and the Union College campus was nice to walk around.

I rode on the Southwest Chief from LAX to ABQ last year and we arrived in ABQ at 11:30am. Scheduled arrival was at 12:22. I had planned on having lunch before detraining but when we arrived early, one car attendant told me that I couldn't get a meal. I went to the dining car and got a burger before ...

This is not a "loop track" in the same sense as the GCT upper level loop or the Danbury loop. Perhaps someone with a little bit more knowledge could explain why this track is called the "loop". I'd like to know myself.... The track was called the loop because it was used to stor...
