...which could run from Brunswick to Augusta, Waterville and Bangor. The delegation from Lewiston and Auburn will be most displeased. Yes that is a fundamental problem that you can't easily satisfy both service to Lewiston/Auburn and Augusta/Waterville/Bangor with one extension. You could run up th...

Just thought of another one. My boys' first trip on Amtrak. We were living in the Philadelphia area at the time. Rode from Ardmore out to Lancaster on the Keystone service, then turned around and rode back on the "Big Apple" a Harrisburg to New York train that was at the time the only trai...

A quick tidbit from the STB Filing , PDF page 192 CSXT plans to install Positive Train Control (“PTC”) (I-ETMS) on the PAR System line segment north of the Massachusetts/New Hampshire State line to Brunswick, ME, which hosts the Amtrak Downeaster service described above. The PTC installation and fu...

Wow it's hard to pick one. 1980 my first trip with my new bride who also loves trains (that's why I married her!) from Paoli PA to Altoona and back same day on the Pennsylvanian with a friendly crew. Must have been September or early October as I remember having a radio with us with the volume turne...

i was thinking a earlier train , heading further south , such as to Raleigh , or even Florida. Well Mr. Benton, sounds like you have the. Havana Special in mind. Shall we relay the track Miami-Key West to boot? You could ride it all the way to that forbidden land if you so choose; not too many othe...

Besides taking the marginal existing routes and shifting to a public bus option, it's also a way to start out some of these questionable new corridors. Chicago-Rockford comes to mind, given the startup costs involved with signaling the line, adding PTC, and adding the crossovers & connecting tr...

I called Amtrak and they said due to COVID, certain trains may not be allowing checked baggage at this time. I wonder what it is about putting a bag into or out of a baggage car can't be done "because of COVID". It has become the new standard excuse for a business or agency to not do what...

Having a sleeper calling at Washington in the graveyard hours might work if you did what they did in the old days and allowed a Boston bound sleeper to be occupied starting at say 9 PM then added to the train, and a Washington bound one dropped off and allowed occupancy until say 8 AM. This would re...

Related of sorts, I'm now thinking a year ahead to an April '22 journey down under to Sydney, NSW where my Niece resides. Since I no longer "houseguest" (that's college stuff to me), I'll be at a hotel (likely an extended stay varietal), and doing much on my own (my Niece, M2K, has her ow...

Or use the current link already in place: the Orange Line, but from Back Bay. There is really no need to go to South Station on Amtrak these days to get to North Station. The only South Shore Lines that miss out are those that use the Fairmount Line. The Old Colony services to MIddleboro, Greenbush...

Looking at this plan with respect to Maine where I live: The extension of some Downeasters to Rockland (presumably a summer weekend only similar to the late lamented Maine Eastern service) had already been proposed pre-pandemic and should be relatively easy to do once agreements are worked out with ...

In the days when Amtrak was running AC to the airport they probably used an F40PH which is 282,000 lbs. max over 56 ft. which is the length, wheelbase would be a little shorter than that.

Jon

EAS does provide a useful service in some cases. For example, the only time I used an EAS flight, Boston to Presque Isle Maine (KPQI). The only other alternative to the 11 hour drive is bus which would require an overnight stay in Bangor as the Bangor to PI bus leaves early in the morning and takes ...

A-Day happened to be the day that I and a couple of railfan friends at Lehigh University in Bethlehem PA had elected to travel to Philadelphia to ride streetcars, subways and commuter trains. Our big question was - will the Reading Company RDC's that ran from Bethlehem to Philly still be running or ...
