In the UK changing ends en route is quite common, and is facilitated by most, possibly all, passenger consists being double-ended: MUs, power cars at each end or a locomotive at one end and a driving trailer (as we call cab cars) at the other. As British coaching stock was traditionally compartmente...

The EGE wrote:* Kingston (RI) dates from 1875, but isn't currently used by Amtrak.
It isn't? I haven't had cause to step inside the station building in a couple of years, but it certainly used to have a ticket agent who I always assumed was an Amtrak employee.

Yes, it now has "(R) (W)" on the left and "PATH/WTC" on the right. Before it was "(R)" on the left "PATH" towards the middle (but with insufficient space for a "(W)") and "WTC Transportation Hub" on the right. Those two latter items were ad...

I use the Dey street connector to get from the 4/5 to my office at 4WTC. The signage to the PATH appeared about two weeks after the connector opened. Sadly, no-one thought to leave space for the return of the W train, so this morning I saw that all the signs have been replaced with new ones.

Definitely get to Montreal station early - we've taken this route a couple of times and the line begins to form up to an hour before departure, and it does get very busy in the summer. As others have said, left-hand side facing forward has the best views of Lake Champlain, and they're worth it. It w...

This sounds very similar to the crash at Hixon in England in 1968, where a low-loader (what we Brits call a "low-boy") carrying a 120-ton electrical transformer grounded on a crossing. The police escort failed to call the signal box from the phone provided at the crossing either before beg...

I hope you didn't have to learn this the hard way, but there's no weekend service east of Ronkonkoma from after Thanksgiving through the end of April. Yeah, thankfully I checked and double-checked the timetables and spotted that (Note 12), so we ended up getting s-i-l to drive us to Speonk where we...

Cross acceptance of tickets between branches

Can a LIRR ticket be used on a different branch than it's indicated for so long as the journey is within the same fare zones? We're visiting my sidter-in-law in Southampton on the Montauk and bought r/t tickets at Penn. We didn't realise there's no return train today (Sunday) until after 4pm, and we...

The exceptions of course being South West Trains, Southeastern, First Great Western, Midland Mainline, Virgin Trains, and GNER each of which I think had/have 10 years+ but even that is a very short lifespan for a service name. And others such as Cross Country and ScotRail have had "Virgin"...

I doubt they'd do that. The cost of rebranding would not be trivial. You'd need new logos on the locomotives, rolling stock, stations, uniforms, you name it. I agree. Although back home in the UK, our privatised franchised system means that rail operators spend thousands changing the name, logo and...

As a MNRR commuter I also prefer the Bombardier cars to the M-7As, and I'm sad that my usual morning train, #734, has changed recently from usually being diesel to usually being EMU. Having said that, the EMUs do keep better time.

That service was (and may still be) available on Heathrow Express from Paddington to Heathrow. I used it with great success prior to 9/11. After that, United discontinued it, and I believe the other US-flag airlines did also. Sadly both the Heathrow and Gatwick Express check-ins and baggage drops a...

My experience commuting on the Hudson line is that my fellow commuters are excellent at picking up after themselves and taking their trash with them, far better than back home in the UK. Also I love the way that when detraining at a busy station like GCT everyone standing in the aisle lets the peopl...
