Whenever new signals are installed, they will be of the inferior color light variety, contrary to the FRA's recommendations.

The LIRR traditionally calls just about all the private bus companies when it needs buses during a service disruption. NICE (Nassau County) is the first called, which always provides service unless all their capacity is being used during rush hours.

The MP-41's were nearly exactly the same cars as the IRT Gibbs cars... Here's the story, written by Joe Frank, who is quite the authority on things of this nature: "The first steel LIRR 1907-8 built "MU Cars" were really exact carbody copies of the earlier 1903-4 built IRT "Gibbs...

Bill, it's nice that you enjoyed your week and the LIRR's operations. Before going into practice, we worked at the railroad for many years. Few riders appreciate the magnitude and complexity of the operation, while many enthusiasts simply join in the complaints. Even now, after having left their emp...

Here's a rather rare view of the convertible third rail shoe on the MP-41's -- the first electric MU cars. Using a special transition rail arrangement, the show would convert from the LIRR's standard to the IRT subway standard. The board won't let me post the photo, so you can use the link while it ...

It was installed on the B & O mainline in Baltimore until 1896. It was also used on a number of Brooklyn freight short lines and in the Steinway Tunnel. Overhead third rail is still used in parts of Korea. It is in place in many parts of Grand Central Terminal, though it is not in use, as no all...

The LIRR's first electrification was of the Rockaway Beach Division in 1906. It closely followed the electrification of their trolley line in Rockaway. Before installing third rail on the Long Island and in Penn Station, tests were carried out on what's now the Garden Mitchell Secondary. Small secti...

You cannot qualify nor remain qualified as a Conductor or Engineer (or any operating position) if you cannot pass the LIRR's test. But many employees can pass the test though they possess some amount of color blindness. If I were you, I would pursue the position while visiting an ophthalmologist who...

As we examined in an earlier post, a primary cause of "human error" calls out for further investigation. What if this engineer and conductor were temporary employees from the Midwest, who was hired by NYAR through a third-party leasing agency to fill a short term need? What if the NYAR's a...

The LIRR President reports in Newsday tomorrow that the "cause" of the collision was the engineer's passing a stop signal.

We've been following this thread with keen interest. This is an interesting time in railroad safety. As many posters know, "human error" is the leading cause of railroad accidents. Technology advances, and as greater automatic controls are perfected and implemented, they lessen the amount ...
