Re: Hurricane Sandy (issues and recovery time)

I've heard the tracks between Kearny Jct and Swift are gone, and the washout itself was pretty bad. Thank you for sharing. The tracks being gone sounds REALLY bad. The catenary poles must be gone then too. At least last year with Irene the tracks of MetroNorth were still hanging in the air. I am gl...

I think the problem with the BCL is down on the other end of the line, before the PVL split, hence why both lines are out of commission. I predict the next lines to come back will be the BCL and PVL, followed by M&E to Summit as well as M-B to MSU (all out of Newark Broad of course). I hope you...

Mr. Eurostar, the MTA website says that (J) service has been restored over the Williamsburg Bridge to Essex Street, but it has nothing on (Q) service. You are right. The MTA had for about 20 minutes yesterday uploaded a map showing both the J and the Q, then that map disappeared and the one showing...

According to the twitter feed the MTA has restored the Q from Astoria to Kings Highway and the J to Essex Street, but they have experienced unforeseen issues with the Rutgers Tunnel at W4 Street.

I am guessing here, but it seems that the MTA took out all the electronics from the Joralemon Street tunnel before the storm. This is probably why they were able to re-establish service in that tunnel first. Did they take the electronics out of any of the other tunnels or was only this tunnel expect...

I recall reading someplace that NJT/Amtrak schedule weekend trains in a way that they could get away with only using 1 North River tunnel. So since they have 1 cleared out, they could in theory run regular weekend service through the North River Tunnels. Correct. On the east side, I think they have...

I wonder if this storm and its damage will give NJT the final excuse to cut service back to Long Branch......even though there are greater infrastructure issues to deal with north of Long Branch and really bad between Matawan and Woodbridge. Please, don't give the Governor ideas like that or we wil...

But parts of the NJCL, ML and RVL were good enough for some service Friday had the ROC not been down. The NJCL only down to Woodbridge, but looking at the damage to the south, particularly in the South Amboy area, I'm thinking it could be months before service is restored there. I'm not sure how it...

Maybe when Metro-North clears/opens the upper Hudson Line (Croton-Harmon->Poughkipsee) and they get Poughkipsee->Albany cleared they can run trains to at least Croton-Harmon so people can connect to Metro-North to New York if the Empire Connection isn't ready yet. In that case, I think Amtrak could...

How old is the current Passaic River Bridge on the M&E line? It seems to me that it is a replacement to an older bridge with 3 tracks -- there are 3 tracks on both sides of the current 2 track bridge.

Current plans are for both spans to be fixed spans 50' above mean water level, and there will be no possibility of opening them, since they will be fixed spans. I wonder whether after the north bridge is built, they can just dismantle the current one, raise the existing abutments by the necessary h...

This seems an appropriate thread to ask this: I am under the impression that the catenary on the Montclair-Boonton line beyond Bay Street is not constant tension. Is that correct? If it is, why did they do that given that this was built relatively recently?

I believe that the tunnel was double tracked in the past -- at least that is the impression that the handouts on the website give. It was probably single tracked with the track shifted to the middle to allow for greater clearance, but still not enough for double-stack cars. I also read somewhere tha...

There is no question that the old bridge is beyond its lifespan, but there is also no doubt that it will be with us for another 4-5 years minimum unless it actually fails completely. All information available points that the "replacement" will be a fixed 2 track span to the north of the ex...

Hello Everyone! With the current plan being for a two track new bridge to the north of the existing one, what is the reasoning for demolishing the old one? I realize that it costs money, but with four tracks over the river, wouldn't it make sense to build two more tracks to Kearny and keep the old b...
