Re: NJT speed limits?

Thanks all for the reminder about the Bay Head runs. Since the RVL lost the NYP-directs with nothing in sight reinstating them, I was wondering what other 'dual-mode' lines were left. The M&E is interesting. Assuming they are run with the ALP45, do trains to Hackettstown "tap the juice"...

On the Main Line, the MAS is 60mph. On the Bergen County line, the MAS is 70 mph. Southern Tier is 79 (Metro-North territory). Not sure what it is for the PVL, but the stops are so close together I doubt you reach above 50mph aside from the swamp to/from SEC. On a side note, is there any line operat...

All of the studies (environmental etc) and public hearings are done regarding the Northern Branch. Last I heard, the next step is funding for construction. The original plan was for the federal government to match the state's funds (50%) to officially green light the project but I've heard Trump's a...

again the equipment and manpower simply isn't there to run the trains. feds are right…can't blame them for lack of staff. NJT is still not done with the PTC installs on all engines. I still see Geeps and PLs sadwiched behind cab cars. I have not seen a 45 or 46 sandwiched behind a cab car for a whi...

Cab cars on Both Ends

I have noticed that on a few trains, NJT has been running a cab car on both ends, with the locomotive sandwiched between the 1st and 2nd cars. Is this due to the controls in the locomotive not working or related to PTC readiness? I have seen both electric and diesels operate this way recently, parti...

Train travel vs air travel from Texas: San Antonio to Chicago takes almost 30.9 hours when it runs on time, Southwest Airlines takes 2.75 hours. Flying saves the traveler over 28 hours - that's 1 day and 4 hours...... No amount of traffic jams not weather related will take 24 hours between the airp...

R&DB: Put "Railfans" at the bottom of your list. All of those are good reasons to choose train travel. Being a railfan should be dead last - you are preaching to the choir here  So true. :-) Generally, I used to be a "take the train every time," but even as a "rai...

Different markets. Acela is catering to business professionals, regional trains are catering to economy passengers. . Bingo. If I were booking travel for work, I probably wouldn't even consider Regional unless Acela were sold out. Business travelers are not price sensitive in many cases. It would d...

What you see is pretty much the original as they came out in 1997/98. As such, they have aged, judging by the lights, LCD display, interior doors, and seats discolored in some areas. I remember riding these same cars back in 2000 and seeing the "picture" of their debut on the now defunct,...

Any "failure" of the brakes may come from any input failing to heed to the engineer's control (I am not sure how likely that is), not from the fail-safe mechanical mechanism of the brakes itself. If you have little to no pressure in the brake pipe or if the compressor was not making enoug...

Secaucus will not be a ghost town. They have a dedicated taxi lane, and a pick up/drop off lane which has activity throughout the day. (During the Hoboken shutdown, there was a long line of cars overflowing into the street, people just decided to be picked up there instead of fumbling around with ad...

A thought; Could the train have lost its brakes due to excessive braking while coming through the switch yard approaching the terminal? I understand that excessive braking can cause air reservoirs to become low or depleted as the demand for air from the reservoir cannot keep up with the compressors...

This is nothing new for those who have Commercial Driver's Licenses (i.e. a license to drive trucks or buses). From the NJ CDL manual from 2006: "Causes for disqualification or suspension of the "P" (passenger) endorsement include, but are not limited to... accumulation of 12 of more ...
