United Railroad Historical Society of NJ · NJ TRANSIT rolled out their newest special project today and we are so proud to share URHS’s role in it! 4101 was one of the few GP40s that wore this sharp blue and silver NJDOT paint scheme from the early days of state-operated public transit. Back in July...

Back in the 1860s, once the Pennsy reached Farmingdale from Jamesburg, PRR had trackage rights on the Southern from Farmingdale north to Eatontown and on to Branchport and Long Branch. Once the NY&LB reached Sea Girt and the Pennsy extended to that point, the Pennsy then had trackage rights ONLY...

Speaking of Sept 11, 1987, it was also another anniversary. At the Pine Creek RR at Allaire, the Irish engine Lady Edith celebrated her 100th birthday. It was part of the annual Railroaders Day event. Assemblyman Frank Pallone was on hand to read a proclamation from the state recognizing Sept 11 as ...

I've seen that happen as well and wondered why. Mixed consist of assorted coaches and a ALP-46 stuck in the middle, in both direstions.

I think I was a little off about Clayton in Jackson. They have a location, I guess it's Lakewood, that has remnants of a siding, seeing it on Google Maps. The Iron Mountain siding ROW still exists under the trees. I'm surprised the town says no to putting it back in. With all the new warehouses spri...

Looking at it from a "maybe what if" point of view, several possible customers exist on the FIT. Nestle/Nescafe and Clayton right in Freehold, the paper recycling facility that used to be the glass factory (siding still there but switch removed), the old Asbury Park Press building, and Sta...

Wow that’s crazy. Where in freehold do they spot the cars? In the Freehold yard across from Builder's General, there is a stub end track where the pole cars were spotted. That's also where the brick car was spotted when that service operated. Some might remember the brick guy with the flatbed truck...

I was driving a school bus when the FIT crossings were paved over. As long as rails were visible, and subject to possible use, we had to make a full stop at the crossings, which I'm sure you'll understand really went over well with other motorists. Some crossings still had crossbuck signs. Once the ...

Gary, I agree about the terrain. But I still miss Farmingdale to Manasquan for the open fields. Ripped out in 1963. I agree, Harry. My first experiences in "chasing" was along the Sea Girt to F'dale stretch. I was little, and Dad enjoyed those "let's go for a ride" jaunts. Seein...

Caboose 5 was brought out of the drink and left to dry. It was then set on fire by persons unknown.

It's frame was later rescued and brought to Pine Creek RR at Allaire, with possible plans to turn it into an excursion car. It didn't happen and was later scrapped.

I always liked chasing on the FIT. Some different scenery, mostly rural, away from busy towns (not counting traffic in Jamesburg and Freehold). Kind of like the Southern through Howell as far as rural operations. Three or four active customers gave the FIT some action. A little change of pace for me...

Me too. Would love to. 67 retired with a few medical issues. Do have some experience, over 40 years with museum railroad experience of all kinds, including a NJ blue- seal steam loco license. In the meantime, I'll just stay out of the way and watch.

Loud horn for sure!

I noticed it was blown extra long, especially at Asbury Road, and Megill Road, and through Farmingdale with all the close-together crossings. Making his presence known! No excuse for not knowing the train was in town!

Gary, "required pretzel" ... awesome! Harry, Fridays are pickle and pretzel day for me. Required purchases at Collingwood since I was a kid. Pumpers, there was a banner on the front of 4408. It said, "Last Run of Conrail SA31. CNJ, CR, NS, C&D" https://i.imgur.com/Ro9V7T1.jpg
