Uh-uh! Topic must be narrowed to LIRR or former LIRR equipment. No wandering. Shame on you who wandered. Bad railfan!

RS-2 1520 is still around.

Someone above mentioned saving a couple of pairs of M-1's. How about this for a twist:
Save two of the MetroNorth M-1's that were converted from the Gas Turbines that were on LI in the Mid 70's. They have more significance than regular M-1's and with all the M-7's coming on line they'll probably be scrapped soon.

Those are still around?

I can only think of two pairs of M-1/3s that are worth saving:

-9001/2 (currently sitting on a dead line)

-When the time comes for the M-3s in 25-30 years, 9945/6 (the "Long Island Masscare" cars). Not only are these the only renumbered M-3s, they also represent a major event in Long Island history and a key event in legal history and gun control.

The gas turbine cars were built new and not converted. Four cars were built by GE and four built by Garrett Research. They were all scrapped in the late 80's.

LIengineerBob,

Thanks for clearing that up about the former IC caboose. I knew about the S-1. We in the preservation movement cannot loose sight of these pieces of equipment. Eventually they will be retired from active service and are of great significance to LIRR's history.

And the S1 may be retired in serviceable condition. Bear that in mind.
