I was fortunate enough to be on the Zephyr as an IRM crew member. It arrived back at CUS at ~8:35p following a mad dash down the BNSF racetrack. Where permitted, the train made every bit of the 79 mph track speed. Some significant delays were encountered en-route, but the crew and passengers slogged through it all and we had a very interesting trip. Round two starts in ten hours.

Mr. Runs, Mr. Byte has addressed the return trip; I was at home commiserating two occurrences; first how my Alma Mater (and Mr. Byte's for that matter as well) was getting taken care of on the gridiron by who???? Louisiana Tech!!! (grief: if all we can do during the non-conference "mismatches" is 2-2, good luck when the real deal starts next Saturday), and second, that the Chicago Symphony is on strike (that has direct impact as I have tickets that will be affected by such).

It appeared that the "soft core" Clarendon Hills railfan community turned out for the Westward passing; the "hard core", if any of such here in town, was elsewhere.

Finally, for the thirty four years I've lived here, I'm at a loss to know why the Chicago Sub is referred to as the "race track". It is 70mph road and is tangent from Cicero to about MP 18.50. But the term was operative even back when I was more of an active railfan during the 60's and 70's.

Thank you kind sirs, I'll be stationed at Clarendon Hills later this afternoon catching the Eastbound run. Thanks to IRM having a GPS tracker, I'll have more than a shot in the dark as when to arrive.

The genesis of racetrack is good question. I've just always seen it as part of the local nomenclature and latched on.

The Nebraska Zephyr does not have the UP cab signals required to get from the Belvedere Sub at West Chicago to Western Avenue hence the UP Pilot unit

and the moves were running as PX971 Westbound and PX972 Eastbound

Just got photos up from my Zephyr trip in June and I spotted this odd mix on the Capitol Corridor on June 13th. It appears to be a double trainset spotted just west of the Suisun-Fairfield station. What I believe happened was that something happened to Train 529 and Train 531 had to couple up and push it the rest of the way. This train was in 531's slot, but I had not seen 529 earlier in the journey.

I was a passenger on on the Saturday Amtrak Special er Extra 9911-A and can attest to the eastbound run down the racetrack. Passed Aurora @ 7:58PM and arrived CUS @ 8:34PM in 36 minutes. It was an unforgettable run! Thanks to Amtrak, BNSF, and IRM.

New Haven is hoarding half of the 40th anniversary locomotives. They have the 145 and the 822!

Ok...you stumped me. You have engines 156,66,822, and 184. Leaving out the 406, what's the 5th unit?

Um...yes...thanks Acelaphillies. I left the engine that is in New Haven off the list somehow. I get it now.
