[quote="tushykushy" It's like breaking a camshaft in a car, that's how rare it is.[/quote] Oh im not even gonna say it. . . .

Lol @ camshafts. The Grand Am will be on the road again soon :P ...

As for the 401, part of the auxiliary generator was broken off and the rubber mounts at the ends were cracked. Therefore, the engine was not able to start again after it was shut down (to do a hard reboot with computers and all). Not a big deal. M of E just has to order a new part from EMD and install it.

and how much longer till DE/M parts are no longer off the shelf and the molds are lost and they need to be casted then re molded?

well EMD is very good in providing parts, all parts for FL-9's and GP8/9 are still available, so a DE/DM should be no problem as well.

correct,

how ever, if no other road buys LIRR consived DE/M locos there parts are not going to be as produced as other off the shelf modles. some parts are unique to the DE/M only and not compatable with off the shelf EMD, then the problem begins, not today and tommrow, but possibly years down the line. has any one looked into that?

Despite difference in carbody its pretty sure EMD uses standard parts for these locomotives, some specialized parts like third rail shoes/beams are obtained from other manufacturers.
