What's that, PR8 that serves it? I grew up right there. That big ugly plant is a staple mark of my childhood. I wonder what the future of it holds.

Okay fine, its served out of Port Reading.......

Thats not the point of my post though - which is that a signifcant shipper is going to be shutting down one of its operations and curtailing the other, and its going to be affecting freight shipments in the area.

Its a shame to see a major industry shutting down anywhere, but even more so in this area. what ever ends up happening to the plant, I hope it doesn't sit empty like the very depressing abandoned Anchor glass plant 5 miles down the railroad. Although if its still standing, i supposed there is always the chance of a re-opening..........

I have noticed shipments out of the PA plant slowing down over the past few months, I guess its just gonna get worse till its all gone :(

The Perth Amboy Gerdu Ameristeel plant had shut down their "hot end" a few years ago and more recently started serving as a scrap processing facility for the Sayreville Gerdu Ameristeel plant. They purchased out of service freightcars like boxcars and covered hopper cars that were cut up on the PA site. The scrap was then processed and shipped over to Sayreville to be used in their furnace. There were strings of cars at the plant waiting to be scrapped.
I plan on calling the plant manager at PA next week to inquire about some railroad equipment I am interested in purchasing so I will try to find out more information about the scope of the closure. I will post my findings on this forum.

Greetings all,
Another flashback for everyone.....1991 if memory serves me right (OK, a guess, but I'm within a year either way of '91), and a cold, snowy January day at Sayreville, with a C36-7 thrown in for your enjoyment......

Drove past Browns yesterday on my way home from work and saw NS 5311 in CR Blue by the yard office.

Didn't stop to take photos because it was getting dark and rather cloudy - but I thought I'd update this thread.

Nice pics! Doesn't SA2 usually work the Gellespie run or something?

It does all the local work in what is considered the yard limits of Browns and sometimes makes a rare run down the FIT or some other line.
