Re: How Worn Out Is Portal Bridge?

Nice looking arch river spans. I see that they opted to go with more structure rather than embankment. With 29 bridges with 124 spans, it really is a pretty massive project. I wonder though how much more it would have cost to allow for a duck under of the southern western approach spans and a doubl...

Interesting that the plan now calls for the southern-most bridge to be fixed as well. While that makes the most sense to me, the earlier documents called for it to be 40 feet above the water line and a lift bridge. (Current Portal Bridge is apparently 23 feet above the water to put it all in perspe...

There are plenty of reasons why the plan is what it is including money, engineering and politics. Once the MTA decided not to be involved there was no way the tunnel was going into Grand Central. Without Amtrak's approval the station was never going to be built below the existing Penn Station. And n...

"The twin tunnels will be located an average of 120 feet below street level and will proceed diagonally northeast then eastward and split into four tunnels to maximize train movements in and out of the expanded New York Penn Station as the tunnels approach 34th Street." 4 tunnels in the m...

Here's a link to the official release. http://www.arctunnel.com/pdf/news/2009-12-9_FirstContractAwarded.pdf This is for the Manhattan part of the tunnel from 12th Ave to the new station. The contract for the tunnel through the Palisades is apparently in prequalification and the contract for the part...

I knew I read it somewhere:

A new island platform and associated expanded areas would be provided at Frank R. Lautenberg Station
between the two new south side tracks for intrastate and interstate passenger travel.

One thing I haven't seen is a layout for the Secaucus station after the tunnel and the new Portal bridge are finished. I thought I read in one of the scoping documents that two new tracks were being built south of the current station but maybe I misread that. And if that's true has anyone seen a pla...

Cruiser, there will just be a single crossover track from the south bridge to the NYPS bound tracks, right? So actually moving any train over to NYPS tracks after it crosses the south bridge will be quite disruptive though doable. Is my understanding correct on that one? In the words of Chris Farle...

Here's how i would see it. I'd think rush hour would look like: Bay Head service: 2x hourly - 2 PVL service: 2x hourly - 2 M-B service 2-4x hourly (Hackettstown to MSU, MSU local to Newark) - 4 Dover/Gladstone MD service: 6-8x hourly - 7 Bergen: 2x hourly - 2.5 Main (lower): 2x hourly - 2.5 Main (u...

Yes, that run along 25th St. would be an excellent corridor for frequent (say half-hourly) service through South Philly, a neighborhood completely devoid of regional rail service. Especially once they knock down the Spectrum, there would be demand for service. And regional rail service would get pe...

A couple of thoughts and questions. First, extending the NJ Transit West Trenton to Jenkintown was considered and rejected in the original study. It seems like re-establishing the Clockers through to 30th Street is a no brainer but could NJ Transit trains -- either Clockers or the Atlantic City trai...

While on a MTD enroute to NYP this morning I got a quick glance of a car that looked like it was being tested running westbound through Harrison towards Newark Broad. This was about 9:15. Looked like it was white with blue and green accents. It was a single car -- no engine -- I guess powered by cat...

For those who haven't seen it I found the Corps of Engineers permit documents on the ARC website. http://www.arctunnel.com/news/
What I hadn't seen before -- on page 33 of the PDF -- is a note that the tunnels will be built with Wye caverns for a possible future connection to the Northern Branch.
