Re: "Only the First Four Cars Will Platform..."

On this topic once again, I had taken a peek at the FH station the other day, and had tried to imagine that *IF* they were finally approved, how would it go... It seems like you could use the existing station as a "center". Hard to estimate but going westbound from the platforms, you have ...

See, what I find funny about the "Subway Up The Block" theory, is that a monthly LIRR pass from FH to Penn is currently over $180 as of this writing, while an unlimited MetroCard is $112. (I myself, not being made of money, opt for the latter for my Manhattan commute...) Yet, when I pass t...

As a Long Islander who moved to Forest Hills a few years ago, I'd always wondered.. Why ARE the platforms at Forest Hills and Kew Gardens only built to handle four cars in both directions? It doesn't seem like space on the track sides was ever a concern, either station could easily be extended outwa...

Actually, while this post was pending, I ended up doing a little back-tracking: Most streets in Queens of course had names prior to numbers. I ended up finding out that 130th was called Maure Ave. A few Google searches later, I was able to re-connect to Arrts Archives after a hit on "Maure Ave ...

Old Station / Yard Access In Jamaica?

So, while I usually will take the NYC subway to work in Jamaica (from Forest Hills), once in a while I need to drive to the office. Long story short, the best way there from my block involves cutting down 130th Street over to Atlantic Ave (which eventually feeds our industrial park). When going sout...

Moffitt also bought himself property around Orowoc Pond, in the area north of South Country Road between Saxon Avenue and Grant Avenue on which to build for himself.
That area is now the location of Islip Middle School and Islip High School. (My alma mater!!)

I can tell you that by the time I took a job in NYC and started commuting daily in the spring of 2008, the ties had been switched out to concrete, and the siding switch removed. I used to remember walking along the tracks towards Brentwood Road exploring the ROW, and remember the Selchow/Righter fac...

Saxon Avenue Siding?

Hello all, new to the group... As a kid, I grew up near the Saxon Avenue crossing on the Montauk Branch. We used to ride our bikes over and hang out on the old siding while watching the push/pull trains go back and forth during the afternoon. I had always wondered what that siding was there for. For...
