Re: GCT Loop Track

Grand Central was actually built with three loop tracks. There was one on the upper level and two on the lower level. The inner loop on the lower level was taken out of service in the 1940s when cars became too long to navigate its tight curvature. You can still see some remnants of the track at the...

Thinking VERY long-term, if MNRR ever gets to it, if you ran Hudson branch trains into Penn (part of the PSAS plan, not currently funded) you might want through running trains. That would require over/under. Or, say you have fleet issues on either side of the sound due to an incident such as Sandy,...

ACES service ended in September of 2011, so those engines have been sitting idle for four years.

From a list of railroad wrecks in NJ, I saw this interesting detour: November 16, 1970 Mahwah EL Eastbound freight derailed, blocking all four tracks of the Main Line. Passenger service diverted over what is now NJT Pascack Valley Line and back to Main Line over now defunct connection between Spring...

I took the SW Chief from LAX to ABQ a few years ago in a roomette. Meals were included and I had a steak dinner shortly after departure from LA. Breakfast was at 7 the next morning and even though we arrived in ABQ early at 11:30, I stayed on board for lunch and got off before the 12:45 departure. T...

NJ Transit reported selling 27,000 tickets to the Meadowlands for today's game. Large crowds at Seacaucus Jct caused some passengers to faint although NJT could not confirm that. Some passengers will be getting home late tonight.

Here is a look at the inside of the 2003. The reverser is located under the throttle. The knob above the throttle is the mode selector. It did have a plastic handle on some units.

no the loop is NOT FRA excepted track, but since no emergency exits exists it is normally not allowed to run passengers around loop. unless permission is given by operations center. MAS on the loop is 6 mph. That is real slow and by the time you make it to CP 1, you are 6-7 min late. Even if trains...

Joseph Guilietti has had a lot of experience in operations. He began his career in train service around the time that Metro-North began their operations or maybe a little bit before that Sorry Noel, but Joe Guiletti started his railroad career as a trainman with Penn Central in 1974. Metro-North di...

I was under the impression that the throttle in the Genesis cab is a "combined" power / brake controller, with dynamic braking notches if you push the controller forward (away from your body) and power notches if you pull back (towards your body). Correct me if I am wrong in this instance...

Years ago, I was taking a morning local out of New Canaan and had tripped the flashers for Grove Street when a school bus ignored the warning signals and pulled in front of me. I was going slow and there was no danger of a crash but the law was broken. I wrote down the license plate number and repor...

Anyone who can afford to go to the Superbowl can most likely afford a Direct Train ride ticket on Amtrak from New Haven to Penn Station especially planning ahead with Fare code 1 + 25% off. However even with this option you still have to connect to another train at Penn Many Amtrak trains will be m...
