Only the engine and a car with only a conductor (presumably a baggage car) slid down the embankment. No deaths, four injuries - none life-threatening. Amtrak has come a long way with the Amfleet interiors - even quite serious accidents cause relatively few deaths and major injuries.

Glad everyone is mostly ok. The Vermonter has 5 cars? I thought it only had 2 or 3 and they lashed up more in New Haven. Been a long time since I saw it though. I can't imagine the track speed is very high out there. 60 to 70 at the most?

Max speed is 59, with a fair number of slower zones. Regular Vermonter is a P42, amcafe/business class and four coaches. No adds or deletes at New Haven.

Don't think this is one PTC could have prevented, either.

DEVELOPING: At least four people were reported hurt after an Amtrak passenger train derailed in central Vermont, sending some cars plunging down a steep embankment. The train hit a rockslide, WCAX reports.

“There are quite a few people that were shaken up,” Montpelier Fire Department spokesman Lt. Dana Huoppi told Fox News.

Vermont State Police and other first responders are on the scene in Norwich, located outside Montpelier and about 2 miles south of Norwich University.

The 13-hour, 45-minute daily trip begins in St. Albans in northern Vermont, according to the Amtrak website. The train is supposed to pass through Burlington, Vermont, Springfield, Massachusetts, and New York before arriving in D.C.
