Like ive stated before, its quite common to scavage parts off locos that are in the shop for other work, more major work than other locos, just to get the other locos back on the road. When time/funds allow, those parts that were scavaged off, will be replaced with new parts

Look at the 4414 - that was a SHELL of a loco about a year and a half ago - its now running by itself back in revenue service.

Can you confirm or deny the quote above??
heard the same thing, but I also heard it was for the reasons that Jtghsu stated. either way the things are still garbage whether they're behaving better now or not. been told that they have units of all classes dropping like flies lately. i know 4219 and 4210 were working under mechanical protest.

And yet they buy more than 2 dozen more '46s (or should I say ALP46-2?) and more Mus on the horizon apparently. I haven't heard a thing about diesels down the pipeline, which sure seems like the immediate problem..........

how much you wanna bet they go shopping in the deadline in Wilmington?? it'd be about as smart as if they bought more PL's.

Sure, NJT is short on diesel equipment and they go off and order more electric locomotives without even mentioning the older diesel fleet... I guess they plan on electrifying half of the dieselized lines by 2010????
I'm not surprised at their motives, so par the course for NJT!
:P

Yes, the PL42AC was not what was hoped. I still think Jt has the right idea of Transit going ahead and having Juniata rebuild some more kitbashed passenger Geeps. Hey, if the wheel isn't broken....

Were the GP40's to have been retired by now?

whatever happened to the pl42 that looked like it had been rear ended and had body/frame damage? someone had posted pics of it about a year ago.

Exactly, NJT could use Juniata or MotivePower to come up with some proposals for a GP40 and F40 modernization program using the proven 710 and Em2000 or even the Q-Tron for control.

Why would NJT want to do that?

The body and frame can only last so many years, nothing lasts forever. These units can only make it so much longer and through so many rebuilts. It be a big mistake and a waste of money to rebuild them again or buy used units. NJT is moving away from rebuilds, the Comet III saga confimed this.

I think its obvious that NJT is moving away from kits and the GP's all together. Yes, the PL42AC units are untested and new but i would give them a little more time to improve before bashing them. As a commuter I havnt been on a PL train that doesnt work, but I have been on a few trains with GP's that have failed.

A majority of the trains on ML/BCL are PL42AC's and now many have mixed sets of newer coaches.

Some say that the Comet V and the PL42AC are not what NJT hoped. Where is this publicly stated? or is this just opinions of employees? What are so bad about them?

Personally I agree. NJ Transit needs to give the PL42AC locomotives some more time and start using them elsewhere on the NJT system such as the NJCL, Atlantic City Line, and the Raritan Valley Lines and not just the NY State routes.

That's my personal opinion.

Yes, why confine the teething issues, breakdowns and delays to just the Erie side. Let's spread the wealth!

We're getting a bit closer. This has been sitting in the engine house at Raritan Yard for over a week now:
