kind of new to model railroading, and owing to an acute lack of space i was thinking of building a switching layout based on a N.E. pa colliery and associated rail lines coming from the mines. thing is i'm having trouble finding saddle tank 0-4-0 locos of any sort, which were pretty much standard issue in the mine roads. i would like to make it narrow gauge but i can't even find an appropriate engine in standard! any thoughts?

Yeah, what scale would be a great help.
There are HO scale models available. Suggestion is to do a Google search for 0-4-0 or 0-4-0T or 0-4-0 saddle tank with the scale you are interested in.

oops, just realized i forgot that. ho, maybe hon3 or hon30, depending on what i can find. nearly all the prototypes i want to model had some sort of narrow gauge operation, be it 42" or 3'. i'd like to be true to that, but it seams there's not a lot of commercially available ho narrow gauge stuff in production.

I would do some Google searches for hon3 and hon30 locomotives engines.
Some use N scale mechanism and make their own locos and run them on N scale track.
I have a n scale diesel switcher with a resin set of parts to make a small Climax.
Below are a few links I found a couple years ago.

How about the newly re-released HOn30 "Minitrains", originally from AHM? Reportedly the new mechanism for the locomotive is vastly improved.

Admittedly the price is a heck of a lot steeper than when these were originally imported back in the late 1960's but they could easily fill the requirements of what the original poster was looking for.

Here's a short video of one in operation:

A little inspiration for a small mining/colliery layout in HOn30:

This link was posted at the Yahoo HOn30 group today and shows what was apparently the prototype locomotive for the AHM offering, a Baldwin-built 0-4-0T purchased by the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company:
