What job does this train do at Jamaica? I'm a commuter and I see one parked just east of Jamaica everyday, just wondering what its role is?

Thanks!
Protect Engine

It stands by in case it's needed to tow a disabled train.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks!

And is there a reason all of them have old faded paint? They are cool looking trains, I bet they'd look even cooler with new paint!

164 is the Jamaica Protect - 163 and 168 were bracketing the alcohol car just west of the station about 5 minutes ago westbound.

And another 4 in Hicksville - 152 and 167 were amongst them.

It costs too much money, manpower, and time to paint them. There has not been a dedicated paint shop in years (all paint has been rolled on since at least the early 1990s). It's only a matter of time before they either get replaced or extensively rebuilt, so don't count on them looking spiffy anytime soon.
