I like your idea, Dinwitty, but that's privately owned. The bus station is city owned, so they wouldn't have to buy a large building to start the project.

seems South Bend is not too railroad keen, IE the CLS&SB thing. Why Amtrak isnt using Union Station with its own building where its at.
prolly a matter of money. The St Joseph station in Michigan is a pizza place, the best pizza I know and its still an Amtrak station, with just a ticket Machine, but you can pay for your ticket on the train if you cant use the machine.
South Bend might not be high on demand for Amtrak passengers since the SS pulls passengers in as well.
Where its at now is a shorter distance to the Airport. A move to the bus depot might be better safety from theft.
