It looks like there is some new railing being installed at the White Pot underjump. Does anybody know what is going on?

The info posted is nice and very informative. However I do not see where the site discusses the OP question? What are the new railings for at White Pot.

I didn't intend to discuss railings, just provide a reference point of White Pot, where it is and what it looks like for the one or two folks here that have never been there to help us with the OP question. My apologies that my "nice" website failed to answer the OP question. :(

commuterjoe: "Railing"? I'm not sure what you mean by this word. Do you mean the steel running rails on which railroad equipment can operate, or do you mean some type of fencing or safety railings?

nyandw: Your website has an interesting photo of LIRR's RDC on a railfan special, April 1957, while stopped at the Whitepot underjump.

Notice the excursion riders walking around the area, and notice the (presumably hot) third rail. I could not imagine a railroad excursion in 2013 where the railroad would allow passengers to detrain at a photo opportunity location where there is an energized third rail right next to the train and passengers have to climb over the energized third rail to detrain and reboard the train.

By railing, I mean safety railing. If you look out the window as the train goes past White Pot you can see it- it's over the old tunnel portal. I only ask because it had looked like the tunnel and the cut for the old track had been filled in with dirt and ballast. Now, a short piece of safety rail was installed on top.

Where is this line located? I've never heard of it. I know it's probably not around or being used anymore.

It's about a mile out of Forest Hills to the west. There is a wide open area where it was.

View my "nice" link above with further info concerning history, location, maps, and photos. Sorry my response doesn't address the OP issue of railings.

I looked out the window the other day and I saw the new railings you are talking about. They also have some signs attached to them. My guess is they say no trespassing or something of the sort.

Drat, I was hoping they said "New Service Coming 2016!"

In this age of liability where you can get sued by a tresspasser, the LIRR probably thought it was prudent to install the railings over the cut as a safery measure for workers and tresspassers. Its the age of cover your a..

Railings and sign are most likely for safety to prevent LIRR trucks and workers from accidentally falling into the underjump.

I've never noticed it before when I take the train to the city. From looking at the map it looks like their is a tunnel of some sort buried in the trees. I'm assuming that's still their? I'll have to look for this next time I go to NYC.
