What's with all the signal failures lately? We can't seem to go by at least a day without some signal failure fouling up a branch/branches.

Its not the weather because it doesnt matter if its rainy, sunny, windy, just plain nice, cloudy.

Actually two words; Computer programmers.

You must remember that computers only do what they are told to do, how to operat the signal system and how to handle error conditions that may occur.

Wasn't there an 'incident' at Jamaica about a year or so ago when JAY was being changed over from the manually operated interlocking machine to computer control where a switch was thrown UNDER a moving passenger rail car? (with the expected result)
A PERSON would NEVER do that sort of thing, however a computer, programmed by an idiot programmer sure (and did) would.

Back to pounding spikes.

Keeps the print shop busy, MORE C CARDS!!!

not for long doc, september the new book of rules is released. rule 241 will provide for verbal permission through a stop signal. the C card is being eliminated entirely through rule 241 and some other rule changes.

C-Card = Crawl card. I understand the theory of moving safely, but it'd be faster to walk between stations when things go FUBAR like they have been.

All the signals are made out of papier-mâché that dissolve into little pieces when exposed to water or direct sunlight. They can only get service back up as fast as the third graders running the railroad can craft new ones.

The signal system on the LIRR is a mix of old and new tech, along with many "meatball" repairs to keep trains moving.
Toss in computer control/programmer errors,it's takes awhile to cleanup the resulting mess.
There's patches on top of patches in most signal boxes along the ROW!

Someone should have told them not to buy their signals at Trainland in Lynbrook. System seems to fail in heat/sun as well as rain lately. If it's not a signal problem it's an equipment failure. They seem hell-bent on buying new-tech, untested junk instead of staying with what's tried & true. It's a disgrace.

A good chunk of old tech signal parts may not exist anymore,or are unrebuildable.
The LIRR is considered part of state(NY) and by law deal with the "low bid" supplier.
The computer control overlay doesn't help, nor will the PTC overlay mandate.

Actually if they bought them in Trainland they might be more reliable....

So much fir the railroad's ads claiming "you'll be hearing less 'we'll be moving shortly' announcements" as a result of the new modern signal system!

Heres a question that I'm sure will stir up a debate. Whats is/was better to use for a signal system? Relay logic vs computer logic? Whats faster to impliment? Relays or computers?

seemed to me over the years, relays were more reliable.. just my 2 cents
