What is the latest news about this line? Is it still the same decrepit old train? Still the same service?

Funny I should find this particular thread, I'm probably going to take a trip to Waterbury this weekend since I haven't had a ride on that line yet. There are trains running all day now, but it looks like only 6 in each direction. From what I've heard the trains are pretty much full, and I really doubt Metro-North has any plans to discontinue service on the branch. As for equipment its the same old cars being pulled by Genesis engines, personally I don't think those trains are all that bad but they could certaintly be better.

I do not think you will find a "decrepit old train". What you will ride are
CDOT or MTA Bomb cars most likely with either a GE, FL-9 or F-10 for
power.
It is an interesting ride and I think you will enjoy it.
Take a few minutes to look around the station area in Waterbury and
maybe you will appreciate what existed there years ago.
The existing main track that you go into Waterbury was at one time
called the "Winsted Main" and there were two tracks between the "Winsted
Main" and the station, track 2 next to the station and track 1 next to your
track.
The main section of the station is the newspaper plant and the "south wing" had the last indoor facilities.
Unfortunately, the State of Connecticut seems to be satisfied with the
cruddy remaining outdoor facilities in Connecticut's fifth largest city.
