JS and Everyone: Interesting way of reviving an almost 20 year old topic...
This new proposal for new Calgary-Edmonton service along with commuter rail can be a good development...
The one important intermediate point is Red Deer - which is almost midway between Alberta's largest cities...
The rail route must be at least competitive time-wise to current bus service...
Edmonton (as example) needs a new terminal station that is more convenient to downtown and/or connects
to the light rail system as compared to the previous VIA station site in South Edmonton...MACTRAXX

Yes the current edmonton station is not great. I was aboard the Canadian a few years ago, we arrived a few hours late. It was hard to find a cab to ride downtown, and the station is way out in the suburbs. Not a good deal.

Also I think we need to be very up front that a Calgary-Edmonton service is not for interline to the Canadian, it is to serve the two markets in Alberta. Trying to force interline service with a 2-3x/week often half-day-late streamliner full of tourists is a terrible mistake. The focus for this train should be quick and convenient rides b/w Calgary and Edmonton.
