it's legal to take photos of whatever you want. Anyone saying otherwise is badly mistaken (police included - they like to try to tell you it's illegal now, but it is not).

"Photography, filming or video recording in any facility or conveyance is permitted except that ancillary equipment such as lights, reflectors or tripods may not be used."

The above is stated in the MTA Rules of Conduct section 1050.9 article C.

Dogbert, I know this is cheating, but it isn't legal to take pictures of the Electric boat facility in Groton, CT. And they're REALLY strict about it. But there's big signs up all around the facility to let you know. Not like you can't get up on a local hill with a telephoto lens or anything like that....

(Hey - small hint to General Dynamics - painting your name on the side of the building in huge letters makes it REALLY stand out from a distance)

Really? Next time you go to Washington DC take the White House tour and try taking a picture inside.

Ok, we're talking about taking photos on MTA property.

You may be asked to leave a station platform or other MTA property if you are only there to take photos, and not conduct business with the MTA. No one can stop you from taking pictures of trains from public streets or other areas...

Everything else, you're on your own.
