A union representing several hundred Metro North Railroad employees has ratcheted up its warnings of a potential strike as soon as September, including handing out fliers to commuters and taking out full-page ads in local newspapers in recent weeks.

The message from the Transportation Workers Union — which represents roughly 600 inspectors, coach cleaners and mechanics for Metro North — has focused on the potential for the first labor walkout in nearly three decades for the railroad, which carries over 100,000 commuters everyday to and from New York City.

Those threats are being driven by the union’s demand for better wage increases as part of its ongoing contract negotiations with Metro-North’s operator, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which have dragged on for nearly five years.
