Additional research: Poor's Manual states that the entire Erie line from Jersey City to Buffalo
had a 3rd rail in 1878.

There was a proposed interurban from Rochester to Elmira. It was turned down by a 3-2 vote by the NY State PUC in 1906. https://books.google.com/books?id=zkhNAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA287&dq=erie+new+york+state+wayland&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwia-P6g0qjcAhURTd8KHaBaCBsQ6AEITjAH#v=onepage&q=...

Of the 22 persons identified as losing their life in the 1943 crash at Wayland,
10 were from NY City. That is surprising to me. (the 10 includes 2 from Staten Island, closer to Hoboken than Grand Central)

I believe most of the deaths were in a NKP coach.

CSX might consider running one direction on the West Shore and the other direction
on the main through downtown. They could remove a lot of track.

Amtrak would run both ways via downtown.

I have looked at several pictures of Erie dual gauge track in Hornell and Cameron and other locations that were not specified. I think the 6' gauge locomotives and cars were wider than standard gauge rolling stock. Not the full 15.5 inches, but somewhat wider. I believe some broad gauge cars and loc...

Re: Portageville Bridge Replacement, Future Tier Traffic

Re bridge abutments, the Shawmut bridge across Stony Brook in Dansville was removed in
1947 and the concrete abutments were still there last time I looked.

There may also be traces of the abutments from the original bridge that was removed over
100 years ago.

CSX shares down 10% in pre-market. Is HH really that good?

Is any US railroad worth 20X the 2018 earnings estimate?

Erie, DL&W, NY Central, PRR, Lehigh Valley, Reading, CNJ, all had to go bankrupt for the pieces to survive. States bled the companies with commuter operations until there was no blood left. Taxes would not be lowered as long as companies could pay. New highways were siphoning off freight. Elimin...

I remember growing up in Wayland. We joked that we lived in the northernmost village in Appalachia. In 1956, as a Cub Scout, I took a DL&W trip to visit the Endicott Johnson shoe factory. It was a same day round trip. Is anything there now? As the US economy transitioned from manufacturing to se...

I recall that some NJ businessman purchased the ROW and was planning to
remove the fill and use it elsewhere. (Later stopped by NJ)
The rest of the salvage may have been part of the deal.

Since the travelers were German immigrants to America, that probably
rules out travel through Canada.

I was driving through Hoosick Falls NY yesterday and was surprised to see a Norfolk Southern loco parked south of NY 22 in the village. I pulled over to see if it would cross the street, but it did not. The train seemed to be cars carrying automobiles which struck me as unusual. I did some research ...
