Hey Guys,

Lately I have noticed that DE/DM locomotives are pulling into and out of stations with no bell ringing. I always remember with the old equipment no diesel would ever pull into or exit a station without the bell on. So my question is when is the bell suppose to be used?

Thanks
Barry

Lets see how good my memory on the rules is..

the use of the bell is required:

1) when movement is about to begin, except during continuous switching movements.

2) when approaching and passing public highway crossings at grade

3) when approaching passenger or freight trains and when passing freight trains

4) when approaching locations at which roadway workers are at work on or near track, bridges or other structures

5) when neccesary to prevent accidents.

I know it's not word for word, but that's basically it.
