The R5 Thorndale is shut down due to a fallen tree at St. David's station. That is understandable. But why is the R6 Cynwyd shut down? Just because they can?

R5 was shutdown due to a sunken track at Overbrook. It was the outbound local track.

Can't blame SEPTA for a tree on Amtrak's ROW....

My guess is that the downed wires at St Davids are connected to the same substation that powers the Cynwyd branch. That's the only reason I could think of, but I'm not an expert on Amtrak/SEPTA substations.

Then again, parts of Lower Merion Twp were hit pretty hard, especially along the PA 23 corridor.

The other shutdown referenced in this thread was at Overbrook, when the #575 (6:45pm Paoli Local) was evacuated after a portion of the ROW was washed out.
