In many timetables I've seen a clear distinction between 2MT ("Two Main Tracks") and DT ("Double Track"), so I guess there is a difference in operation between these two.. Am I correct in assuming that "2MT" is directional, while DT is bi-directional? Or is there some other difference (or the other way around)?

I believe it's the reverse of what you said. "Double Track" is directional ABS (Automatic Block System). I'm pretty sure "2MT" means multiple (2) tracks with CTC (each track signalled in both directions).

LJC is correct, except,... term "multiple main" track is used when there are more then 2 mains.

"Double track" is applied exclusively to main tracks upon which current of traffic is established and each track may be signaled for movement only in one direction.

Think of "double track" as two city streets upon which movement may be made only in the posted direction.

"Multiple main track(s)" signify two or more main tracks upon which movement may be made in either direction upon each main track under provisions of established authority or protection, as specified either by subdivision special instructions or general order.
