Downers Grove, IL - Nobody was injured when a Metra commuter train struck a vehicle on the tracks in downtown Downers Grove Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. at the Forest Avenue crossing, which is just west of Main Street in downtown district.
“A woman was starting to go over the track, the gate started to go down and she panicked,” said Deputy Police Chief Jim Black.
The woman left her car on the tracks and the inbound train, which was scheduled to stop at Main Street, crashed into the vehicle.
No one was injured, and the damage to the car was minimal since the train only clipped the vehicle, Black said. Police officers drove the car across the tracks, and the owner was able to drive away soon after, police said.
Traffic was redirected by police officers, and several commuter trains were delayed as the vehicle was moved and some debris was cleaned away.
Metra spokesman Tom Miller said 11 trains on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway were delayed between eight and 34 minutes due to the rush hour accident. Normal schedules resumed at about 7:45 p.m. that evening.
Note from the article: The train that struck the van was outbound #1257, express to Naperville. Since the train had crossed over 2-1 at Fairview, it wasn't going at a high rate of speed.
