NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT is taking the next step to enhance the customer experience with the new “Tap & Ride” payment option for bus and light rail customers. The feature allows bus and light rail customers to use their contactless credit and debit cards with the existing validators on board buses and at light rail stations. “Tap & Ride” is now available to customers of all NJ TRANSIT bus routes (except for A&C and O.N.E. emergency stabilization service at this time) and all light rail lines.

The last time I was at EWR, I was delighted to see that they finally replaced all the legacy code scanners that were the most finicky things on the planet with these updated combination NFC/QR code scanners. They work much more quickly and reliably, though in my observations of people using them, they seem to really struggle with understanding which way the barcode needs to face and where the device needs to be placed for it to read properly.
