I was driving down Smith Rd. in Shirley and looked easbound on the track. I saw a position light signal. This signal was just west of the Mastic train station. I thought it was manual territory east of Patchogue. Why would they have a block limit signal at BO, but about 3 miles east of it have a position light signal?

Anyone know what or where i'm talking about?

Could be that it is the signal for the "MS" remote-controlled interlockings that are controlled from "PD" in Patchogue. The signal(s) most probably replaced the ones that used to be located EAST of the Mastic-Shirley station, shown here:

Look closely and you can see the depot in the background. This view is looking west. You will also see the "MS" block limit station signals and identifying call letters on the position light mast. The block limit station was placed out of service on 2/5/80.
