I saw this on the BNSF webpage, but for Salary Range it shows "CHANGE THIS". Does anybody here have any idea what the approximately salary is for this job? Also, what about the winter. I assume that the Bridge Tenders must be laid off for a few months out of the year.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Operate and maintain railroad drawbridges. Requires communication by telephone, two way radio, lifting or swinging of drawbridges for safe passage of vessels or trains accordingly.

SAFETY: Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action. May be required to handle hazardous materials.

DIRECT MARINE AND RAILROAD TRAFFIC: Direct marine and railroad traffic, raising and lowering the Lift Bridge as needed; give trackage rights for Maintenance of Way gangs and B&B personnel, Protect personnel/equipment during train movement.

COMMUNICATION: Operate railroad radio, marine radio, and phones; Communicate with Trainmasters as needed for proper train movement; Relay information from the USCG to barge traffic about restrictions at the causeway bridge (where applicable).

Basic Qualifications:

18 years of age or older.
High School diploma or GED.
Available to work in the geographic area indicated.
Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
Available to work a 40 hour work week subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include weeknights, weekends and holidays.
Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Possess a valid state-issued driver’s license.
Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors.
Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
Able to perform work on uneven surfaces and at various heights above the ground and over water including working in a suspended tower and walking on a bridge to perform routine inspection and maintenance; frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment.
Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, lift, work, walk, stand and sit in confined spaces for extended periods of time and use hand and power tools.

Training: Company paid on-the-job training is provided.

Relocation: Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Work Conditions: Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.

Probationary Period: 60 days

Shifts/Hours: Work weeks are 40 hours per week. Typically, shifts are weekdays, Monday through Friday. May be subject to on-call, overtime, weekends and holidays.

Dues: Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.

I believe it would be about $23/hr. However could be more like $28. Not sure about lay offs in the winter.
In my experience those types of jobs go to individuals already in the company that want a cush job up to retirement. Don't mark my words but I believe I'm pretty close.
