Hello. I attended a hiring session today for Train Crew. The presenter mentioned that you have to be in your initial craft for 1 year--or was it 2 years--before moving to another. So yes, there are time-in-craft restrictions for moving from craft to craft.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about bridge tenders.... But in order to move around the company, you have to wait at least 1 year before applying for other positions. Also, your supervisor must "OK" your transfer to another department. Once you got your foot in the door, make connections with the railroad police, and they will put you on the "short list"...

Jim,

There is no telling in what order they are going to do the hiring. Craft transfers within the company don't always get the preference.
Age is also not an issue. The retirement is really good, but you have to put in 30 years in order to collect the full benefits.
