I recently made note of the fuel consumption on a distributed-power coal train to Paducah. With the exception of the 3-mile climb out of the river basin at E. St. Louis, the terrain is relatively level. Total distance: 170+/- miles.
109x0-14,852-tons, 5972' long.
Tons Per Operative Brake: 130.6
Horsepower Per ton: 0.9
UP 5621 C-44ACCTE, 4390 HP.
UP 8199 SD-9043AC, 4300 HP.
DP unit: The late, great SP 316, now known as the UP 6360 C-44AC, 4390 HP.

UP 5621 Initial Fuel Reading: 2900 gallons, Final Fuel Reading: 2210 gallons

UP 8199 Initial Fuel Reading: 2790 gallons, Final Fuel Reading: 2120 gallons

No final reading on the DP unit for obvious reasons.

Interesting, because conventional wisdom is that the FDL is measurably more fuel efficient than the 710G.
