Could the old rebuilt F40 outlast the P42? The rebuilt/repainted on Music City Star seem to work fine. Could last another 10+ years in commuter service?
TTBOMK, the F40 is the last major road passenger unit with limited onboard automation. It uses standard EMD components… a 645 engine, Blomberg trucks, and -2 level e9ectrical system. It was designed to be reliable. It’s also a shelter body, not a structural body. Witness the holes punched in some former units to make the cabbages.

Now look at the GE. it’s a true car body, just like the E, the F, and the PA. That means you have to play nice with the body to pull big parts. That can be a PITA for short line shop forces.

I think the F40 will be serving after the genesis units have gone to the scrap yards.
