All this is useless unless more service is added to the PJ Line. It needs to be hourly throughout the day if people would ever consider using it to an airport. As of now, if my flight comes in at 4pm, I'd have to get the 10:30 train back to NYC.

Some sort of tram/shuttle to the terminal would make more sense than having a dedicated train run to the airport and terminate.

SJ, agree. But until they get the passing sidings and mid line yard, that's not going to happen. Plus, NJT!

The passing sidings and yard are in the 5 year plan... unfortunately so is NJT.

The top priority for the Pt. Jervis Line is those sidings and the yard. As for train service to Stewart Airport, a spur would be nice and not only would it serve the airport but it obviously serve Newburgh. However, I do support bus service running from either Harriman or Salisbury Mills-Cornwall Station to Stewart. It would also be nice for the bus that serves Beacon and Newburgh and Stewart to run more, especially daily. Not relevant to Stewart connections to train stations, but the ferry that runs between Beacon and Newburgh is meant for commuters. It seems that the bus is meant for both commuters and tourists.

I certainly hope their conclusion to put the spur on the back burner didnt cost millions of taxpayer dollars. :/

FWIW, this track looks like it could easily reconnect the old Erie line to Newburgh and the River Line. Noel Weaver mentioned in that same thread that Conrail didn't want it, it was disconnected, only to be reconnected later. It has one freight customer.

DISCLOSURE: this is NOT an endorsement of running passenger service ONTO the River Line in Newburgh.

However, it would be possible to perhaps improve the connection to Stewart via this old line. I have no idea where the old NYC station was in Newburgh, but you could reconnect and extend service to New Windsor and/or Newburgh, and just have a station track that does not connect with the River Line but runs along it, past the connection? Would people prefer this option to crossing over to Beacon?

Whether it's to service Newburgh or Stewart, this complicates the PJ operation, now with two termini.

I'm guessing that the Stewart Connection is at Salisbury Mills now? This would seem to be better.

Side note: if you scroll around the map, up the line at Campbell Hall there's an NYSW? freight line that approaches Stewart from the West. Not sure if that's feasible.

For better or worse,All of WOH service is tangled with NJT,including Dispatch,T&E crews,MW and MoE crews.
MN should start getting ALL their Equipment to MN yards for accounting purposes,and find a way to restrict the"wandering around"
away from Bergen County/Mainline/Pascack Valley services. ie:No more side trips to the Newark (NEC)side or to Dover,Gladstone or Booton

Yes, If MTA really does increase service and make hourly trips to Middletown, they will need to either purchase more equipment, or restrict their equipment to the Southern Tier. They would probably have enough equipment already if they did that and NJT would be the ones scrambling.


It looks like that route does go right into the heart of Newburgh, but doesn't really go anywhere near the airport. When you really look at it, Salisbury Mills is a stones throw from Newburgh and probably the easiest station to get to from the city.

Perhaps MN can buy some 2nd hand Comet IIR's or IV's from NJT once the new multi level EMUs are purchased.. Weren't they supposed to get additional ML coach order tacked on as well??

Maybe they can go, hat in hand, to MARC and hope for some more donations...

I'm pretty sure that's the former Erie Railroad Newburgh Branch. The O&W was farther south-- it followed Moodna Creek down to a junction with the West Shore at Cornwall-on-Hudson.
