Because only one track passes by Main Street Station now, "Any time Amtrak stops here, a freight train cannot pass," said Kevin Page, the director of rail for the state's rail and transportation department.
Eh? Amtrak uses the track on the east side of the station. The track on the west side is definitely active. Most days I go by there (3-4 times a week?) there's a train sitting on the west track, usually one full of covered hoppers. In fact, the current satellite image used by Google Maps shows a coal train on the western track. (Go to Google, click on maps, enter "main street station richmond va" and you'll see it.) Maybe they mean that they can't pass going south?
