What class of diesel oil does the LIRR use in it's locos? I assume it can't be #2 because it would cost too much. The DMs are 2 stroke low speed so maybe its #4 or #5? ANyone with insight on this?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is #2. They are specially designed to run on it and if anything else is put in there, they supposedly will not run well. It is not any type of waste fuel oil or combination.

The LIRR does burn #2 oil which is heavier than kerosene and is normally used for home heating.

Nobody pays tax on #2 Heating Oil in New York City or Nassau County, or any heating oil for that matter. Only natural gas is taxed in those counties, and the LIRR is exempt from that tax for heating its buildings.
