We're putting way too much stock into this Bergen Loop. While the Gateway tunnel might get done a decade or so from now, the Bergen Loop might never be seen in our lifetime...

So that means that more slots from the new Gateway Infrastructure would go to trains operating from Trenton, and that a direct train will never operate from Suffern to NYC Penn Station?

What's wrong with transferring at Secaucus? BTW, even with the transfer, Suffern to NYP can be done in a manageable time period.

But doesn't that "transfer" hurt property values in Bergen County?

Aren't property values high enough in Bergen County? With towns like Saddle River, Saddle River, Ramsey, Paramus, Upper Saddle River, Ho Ho Kus, etc... many people are already priced out of Bergen County as is.

Therefore, would it be better for the MTA to put their money into Gateway or the Seven Subway Extension to Secaucus, New Jersey?

O$$$ will be spent on Gateway and the pipedream of the #7 to New Jersey, both are NOT MTA projects!!!
MTA(LIRR) will be involved with platform improvements at NY Penn, along with Amtrak and NJT,
Most of the projects are for mandated upgrades(PTC) and state of good repair, storm hardening(Sandy damage)
type work.

No MTA money or New York State money should be put in to anything in New Jersey with the exception of something concerning the West of Hudson services to Spring Valley or Port Jervis. The most ridiculous idea in my opinion is extending the No. 7 subway train to New Jersey. The TA is a New York City operation period and that is what it needs to stay, anything else is a can of worms with regulations and waste and a lot of money too.

Not to get off topic, but any other money spent on the 7 line should be used to extending it into eastern queens, not into NJ.

So what is more likely to get built--Seven Extension to Secaucus or the Gateway Project?

the seven extension is dead, not going to happen, Gateway is a must, but will require many more years of planning

I take it that there are zero plans to enable higher speeds on the New Haven Line?

Unless you plan on straightening the Connecticut Shoreline first, no.
