We just took our last ride on a large scale "G16" train that a co-worker ran in his backyard. While we were discussing the history of G16 trains, he mentioned how other people across the US are into it and even described how one person has a large GP38 engine that is run on a real diesel engine. Has anyone heard or read about one of these types of trains running on an actual diesel engine?

Also, could anyone please point me in the right direction as to where to learn and gain more knowledge about them? Thank you.

I've seen some neat stuff online where people use CNC laser cutting to make nice steel kits.

A quick search also found these guys:

And by no means are they the only ones. Laser cutting has made it possible to build kits to order and still have them precise. I got the chance to play with this stuff once back in college and it's an absolute blast. Almost as much fun as real railroading.
