Prior to being simplified, the interlockings of the Port Jefferson Branch for a period in the mid 20th century were:

Amott

Burke
Corey

Duke
Evans

Fox
Green

Hare
Post

If you notice, they were all named in alphabetical order from west to east, with Post being the only location not in alphabetical order.

Is there any knowledge of where the names came from, and why they were specifically placed in order? It's the only branch with this particular setup.

Hello everyone, Some of the interlockings on the Port Jeff branch were named for some of the Conductors and engineers who plied that branch. Thank you Frank And Cindy

AMOTT: EAST OF SYOSSET. (CONTROLLED FROM “DIVIDE.” IN SVC: 10/7/61. NAMED IN HONOR OF RETIRED LIRR ENGINEERS JOSEPH H., JR., CHARLES A. AND JAMES A. AMOTT per The Long Island Railroader: 10/11/61)

BURKE: WEST OF HUNTINGTON (IN SVC: 5/22/62. NAMED AFTER RETIRED TRACK FOREMAN PATRICK BURKE per The Long Island Railroader: 10/11/61. NAMED AFTER RETIRED CONDUCTOR JOE BURKE per W. S. Boerckel. OUT OF SVC: 6/26/72. BECAME “HUNT 1” LOCATION)

Dave Keller's Call Letter History: http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirrphotos/ ... ETTERS.htm has the rest of the listings. :-)

I would venture (opinion) no other "worthy" names after HARE until we came to POST, as they all appear as reported in the The Long Island Railroader: 10/11/61.
