Think you're mixing your destinations, JoeG. The NY Penn fares have not been impacted at all with the differing fare change dates between NJT and MN, The service just started; there hasn't been either an NJT or MN fare change in the interim.

The HOB fares, on the other hand, are impacted.

ajt--the fares to nyp are impacted in that the Suffern-nyp fares can't be more than the Sloatsburg-nyp fares. In fact, the Suffern-Sec-NYP monthly pass is $6 less than the Sloatsburg pass. (Same $6 difference to Hoboken, although the fare is less.) The Metro North 9% discount is around $20.

Joe-

Sloatsburg-NYP is $6 more than Suffern-NYP ($245 v. $239).
Sloatsburg-HOB is $44 more than Suffern-HOB ($199 v. $155).

Suffern-NYP is the same as all other zone 14-NYP fares, $239.
Suffern-HOB would be $193, the Hob Div zone 14 to HOB fare, if the NJT & MN fare changes had been coincident over the past two decades, not the $155 currently being charged.

At the $193 rate, Sloatsburg-HOB would be $6 more than Suffern-HOB.

The crux of the issue are the HOB fares, not the NYP fares. Suffern-NYP is where it should be relative to the rest of the system.

ajt--
I see I've misread the fare table. However, I'm still puzzled about why the Suffern-NYP monthly rate is only $6 less than Sloatsburg-NYP rate but the Sloatsburg-Hoboken rate is $44 more than the Suffern-Hoboken rate. To look at it another way, the premium to go to NYP instead of Hoboken from Suffern is $84 on a monthly pass, but the premium from Sloatsburg is $44. You seem to have a handle on this--perhaps you could explain these differences.

Absent Metro North stations, fares and fare changes, the Suffern-HOB fare would be $193 today, like all other non Main-Bergen zone 14 Hob Division stations.

The deal between NJT and MN for operation to Port Jervis and Spring Valley includes MN setting fares to their stations (note Suffern is not MN; it is NJT).

So what happens if MN prices their stations below that of NJT? The deal is for NJT fares not to exceed the MN fare, and MN pays NJT the difference.

What's happened now is MN has increased their fares. While NJT has the option to, in turn, move their fares up, they haven't.

So, with the 4-1-02 fare change the Suffern-HOB pass should have been $193, but was held at $155 because of the Sloatsburg-HOB $155 fare.

Subsequently MN increased the Sloatsburg fare to $199, and NJT did not increase the Suffern fare to $193 from $155.

Being a later addition, NY Penn fares have a different 'deal', and are at the level they should be relative to the rest of the system.

Thanks for the clarification, ajt.

Jtgshu,

I tried changing the origin code for the airport at the TVM's at Metropark and the machine said at the bottom of the screen:

Origin not available from this station.

So where could you get the $5 ticket?

$5 tickets are available at the EWR station. There are TVMs placed before the turnstiles.
