...i.e. when a dispatcher calls a train, how does the train identify itself?

For the subway it is whatever the departing terminal was and the time of departure...like Pelham 123 - except it should have been Pelham 1323. If you happen to have a scanner, you would hear RCC call "2250 South Ferry for radio check" etc all the time...which would be the the 10:50pm #1 train departure out of South Ferry for 242nd Street

B division also uses a phonetic for each line name as part of the call sign

IE "Delta Stillwell 14:23"

Bravo- sometimes the Beyonce ;)

Delta - sometimes the dog.

Golf
Hotel - but they just call it the shuttle

Larry
Mike
November but some people call it the Nancy.
Quebec but people call it Quincy sometimes, which sounds like Whiskey
