I AM A NEW USER AND WOULD LIKE TO SAY HI. I HAVE CURRENTLY
APPLIED WITH UP, BUT WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD TELL ME IF BNSF HIRES IN HOUSTON AND HOW OFTEN.

Duane,

Yes the BNSF does hire in Houston... As far as how often, all I can tell you is to keep checking their web-site... It's completely random, I think the last time they posted for Houston was for a conductor tainee position, and that was back in March sometime... Nothing since... I know there is a conductor class happening right now (my buddy is in it)... There's another conductor class starting on July 11th, another buddy of mine will be in that one... Each class is 13 weeks, so I'm guessing at least for conductor they probably won't have anything until around August..

But again it's random, there's not rhyme or reason to it. It's not done in some pattern.. I've seen 'em post for conductor, have an orientation, select a class, and 2-3 weeks later post again for the same position.. So just keep checking their website.

Hope that answers your question, and good luck...

THANKS FOR THE INFO ON BNSF I HOPE THEY START IN AUGUST.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING ON UP TO OPEN TRAIN SERVICE UP AGAIN IN
HOUSTON, I HAVE A CURRENT APPLICATION IN WITH THEM THAT I
FILLED OUT IN MARCH. I GOT A PHONE CALL SAYING THAT THEY
CLOSED TRAIN SERVICE IN HOUSTON AND THAT I COULD APPLY
FOR AN OTHER POSITON THEY HAVE OPEN. NOT SURE IF I SHOULD
APPLY FOR ANOTHER OPENING IN TEXAS OR JUST WAIT AND SEE
THEY OPEN TRAIN SERVICE UP AGAIN IN A MONTH OR SO.
IF YOU OR ANYONE HAS ANY INFO ON THIS IT WOULD BE
WELCOMED.
THANKS AGAIN

DUANE.

Hi Duane,

At the BNSF website you can choose Texas as the state you want
to apply for and when they have another opening they will email
you an invitation to an interview.

UP is hurting for people in Texas right now as well as California.

Here are two options for you:

Hire on anywhere with BNSF except for the following states which
are areas where you can not transfer to the other states without
losing your seniority: Montana, North Dakota, Washington, upper
parts of Wyoming.

Apply at very busy places like Alliance, Nebraska with BNSF and
then when your seniority can hold a spot in Houston you can
transfer to Houston.

The other option is to go the the BNSF sponsored school called the
National Academy of Railroad Sciences located at Johnson community
college in Overland Park, KS.

They will interview you at the end of the school and you have a
85-95% chance of getting a job right away with BNSF where ever
they need people.

Again you go and then can transfer to Houston later on.

Hope this helps.

THANKS FOR THE INFO AND THE GUIDE IS GREAT, I HAVE A CURRENT
APPLICATION IN WITH U.P. FOR TRAIN SERVICE IN HOUSTON. I
RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THEM THE OTHER DAY STATING THAT
THEY HAD CLOSED TRAIN SERVICE IN HOUSTON, AND THAT I COULD
REAPPLY AT ANY OF THE OTHER OPENINGS THEY HAD LISTED. HAVE
YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RUN INTO THIS BEFORE, AND I WONDER IF I
SHOULD WAIT FOR HOUSTON OR APPLY ELSEWHERE.

UP is full right now in Houston as far as train service positoins. They seem to be less tollerant of mistakes or absence lately (fired two new hires last week).

You never know when they will be hiring again. There were many people hired in 2004 so it may be a little while before they start hiring. I'm sure they will do more hiring in the future because there are so many that will be up for retirement within the next five years.
