Per p.4 of Thomas Humphrey and Norton Clark's Boston Commuter Rail: Second Section, Boston Street Railway Association, 1986, the Lower Falls Branch was electrified between 1900 and 1930, ending when the Middlesex & Boston Street Railways changed from trolleys to buses on an intersecting line and shut down the power plant that had also provided electricity to what was called the Ping-Pong shuttle service. The line then reverted to steam, diesels starting in April, 1951.
